Josie Hoover

Dr. Josie Hoover is a teacher, preacher, choreographer and consultant in liturgical dance. In September 2001, Josie accepted her call to sacred dance through the liturgical dance ministry at Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, MD. Josie graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 2008 from Wesley Theological Seminary to further nurture her ministerial vocation and passion for sacred artistry. In 2015, she graduated with a Doctor of Ministry degree from Wesley to expound upon her theological foundation for dance.
Josie has served as the chairperson and choreographer for In the Spirit Liturgical Dance Ministry, the resident dance ministry at Westphalia United Methodist Church (Upper Marlboro, MD) where the Rev. Dr. Timothy West is Senior Pastor. During her tenure at Westphalia, Josie worked to incorporate and instill a standard for ministry which continues to be upheld today: complete guidance by the Spirit of God; foundation in the Word of God; and the application of ministry as a lifestyle.
Josie has been able to use her God-given gifts to not only preach but to teach, consult & choreograph with local dance ministries; facilitate and choreograph at dance, worship & church conferences; and minister at special events. As an educator, Josie serves as an adjunct professor at Wesley Theological Seminary, “Spirit in Motion”, a ministry whose mission is at the heart of Josie’s philosophy was founded to utilize the art of dance to inspire, uplift, enrich, empower, and restore the Church Universal. Additional community outreach efforts include serving on the boards of Ngoma Center for Dance (Washington, DC) and Dancing by the Power: Movement Matters, Inc. (College Park, MD) where she also serves as the company’s spiritual director.
Josie is married to Pastor Ashley B. Hoover, Lead Pastor at Cherry Hill United Methodist Church in Baltimore, MD.
