Catherine Kapikian

Founder and Distinguished Artist-In-Residence

Catherine Kapikian founded the Center for the Arts and Religion and served as its Director until 2008. She is an acclaimed and commissioned artist. Her work, inclusive of paraments, vestments, banners, tapestries, and fiber with wood installations can be seen in a variety of worship spaces inclusive of every major Christian denomination, interfaith military chapels, and synagogues. Many of her large-format works, like needlepoint tapestries behind altars, are designed by her and fabricated by members of the community in what she calls “participatory aesthetics.” In this manner, the installation becomes the work of the people. Catherine teaches, gives lectures and workshops nationwide and writes and publishes articles in the field of art and theology. Upon her retirement as Director of the Center, she was named Distinguished-Arist-In-Residence and continues to teach in the studio.
